about

Tehran – Berlin. The magical union of two musical worlds.

In November 2019 Hub Hildenbrand and Farhad Safari met for the first time. A string of coincidences brought them together for two very spontaneous concerts in Berlin, Germany. They instantly felt, that this was just the beginning of their musical journey. In the same week studio recordings in Berlin were organised. These are now published as "First Meeting". The seven tracks are documenting intense and intimate dialogues of two improvising musicians coming from different cultures (Germany and Iran).

Their music shows a high degree of mutual understanding and the idea of music as a world language becomes particularly obvious: While their musical dialogue is characterized by great ease and spontaneity, verbal communication was not possible without an interpreter.

Guitarist and composer Hub Hildenbrand from Berlin, Germany is strongly influenced by European music and jazz, but has also studied Indian and Turkish classical music. He has been interested as well in Persian music. Especially the the Persian Tar inspired him to explore new sounds on the guitar.

Farhad Safari is an Iranian percussionist living in Tehran. He learned the Tombak, the traditional percussion instrument of Persia with Alireza Mashouf and Bahman Rajabi. He is deeply rooted in Persian classical music, where improvisation has a very high status. Furthermore, he breaks through norms and traditions by opening up to western music, such as jazz. He is also an innovative instrument maker and adds completely new colours to the fund of percussion instruments of Persian music.
